102: Fallen angel by Mark McCullough
EXT. NEW YORK CITY – Night
Opening shot shows a deserted street in New York. It is late at night and lights are on indoors. After a few seconds we see a man wrapped in a long trench coat humming as he walks. He is Jonathan Cahill, 50. Kind hearted man with a large belly short grey hair and a beard, a man who always wears a smile and looks out for others. Camera follows Jonathan as he walks down a deserted street. As he passes the alleyway he stops and turns as a sound draws his attention. Dismissing it as nothing with a wave of his hand he goes to move on, but the sound repeats. It is the sound of someone crying.
JONATHAN
Hello? Is anyone there?
Not getting a reply he looks around for help before he decides to walk down the alleyway to see what is happening as compelled by his Good Samaritan nature. As he gets further down the alleyway, the sobbing gets louder. When he reaches the end he notices a young girl no more than 14 curled in a ball crying, her golden locks of hair the only distinguishable feature. He kneels down beside her and tries to reconcile her.
JONATHAN
It’s ok, I’ve got you now.
GIRL
(Sobbing)
JONATHAN
Come on, let’s get you home. Someone is bound to be looking for you.
He tries to put a comforting arm around the girl. She resists pushing him away with surprising strength for a girl her size. Without lifting her head she replies between deep sobs.
GIRL
Stay away… Don’t touch me…
JONATHAN
Do you want me to get someone for you? Tell me what you need.
GIRL
Go away!
Jonathan was fed up with the situation; he was reluctant to leave a young girl to endure the cold of a New York Night. We see him remember passing a police station only a few blocks before arriving at the alleyway. She is very skinny and looks very light. He could carry her there. As he goes to pick her up she pushes him back causing him to collide with the wall behind him. Not good for his bad back.
GIRL
I told you not to touch me. You should have listened
She pulls herself to her feet standing in front of Jonathan who can now see her face for the first time. It looks human, but there is something uncanny about the positioning of its components and her complexion. Shaking with anger her skin turns a pure blue colour similar to that of an ocean.
JONATHAN

EXT. NEW YORK CITY – ALLEYWAY – Early Morning
A police car pulls up beside the alley way which is now closed by yellow crime scene tape. Detective Phil McKenna, 30, athletic build with a shaven head, fiercely loyal and impeccably dressed. His partner Detective Sean Taylor, 35, short man with messy black hair and round glasses. They exit the car and enter the alleyway ducking under the tape.
SEAN
Just a minute…
Phil had already stopped aware of his partner’s habits. He waited until Sean had blessed himself before he spoke
PHIL
You know, I always admire that you do that. It’s easy to forget that things are more than just a case, there are real people involved.
SEAN
Yeah. You ready to go?
PHIL
Ready when you are
When they reached the end of the alleyway they were met by three more officers who were standing blocking their view of the body whose legs were all they could see. One of the men wore a dark suit and had ginger hair whilst the other two were in standard police uniform. The figure belonged to Cathal O’Reilly, 60, head of the homicide division of the NYPD. He is a stern man who demands the best from his team at all times. It is unusual for him to be present at the crime scene; the detectives are taken aback by his presence. When he sees his detectives arrive, he dismisses the two uniformed men standing either side of him.
CATHAL
Well if it isn’t my two star detectives. You better not mess this one up. My run at the commissioner’s job needs to be clean. I can’t afford you two baboons messing that up.
PHIL
When have we ever let you down Guv.
CATHAL
Do you really want me to answer that?
SEAN
Victims name?
CATHAL
Victim is one Jonathan Cahill. Identification made from his ID in his wallet. As I’m sure you are aware Mr. Cahill held a high position on the church committee. He is well known for his charity work in the area so it’s a surprise that anyone would do this to him. The officers who just left were first on the scene they claim to have found him like this. The murder was reported by a Mrs. Jones who lives across the street, found the body this morning when taking the rubbish out to the bins. So what do homicides’ bright young stars think of this one?
SEAN
There is something that strikes me as odd. Look at how the body is lying. It’s like he was killed standing against the wall and then fell into that sitting position.
CATHAL
No. No. No. Tell him why that can’t be the case Detective McKenna
PHIL
Lack of blood, if that had been the case with multiple stab wounds there would have been blood down the wall.
CATHAL
Which means?
SEAN
That he was killed somewhere else and dumped here. And the pool of water around the body, it didn’t rain last night, so where did that come from? It had to have been there before the body was dumped or there would have been some traces of blood.
CATHAL
Exactly! Now I want you to find out where and bring me the man that done this. Need I remind you that this is a high profile case? Don’t mess it up. Get the photographer to take photos of the crime scene and get moving
INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY – Early Morning
Amy is in the kitchen area of the office pouring boiling water into the teapot. Sam is sitting in the main office area reading the paper with his feet resting on the table.
SAM
Rory’s in the paper again. It’s a huge headline too, ‘Another Medical Miracle.’
AMY
Can we not tell him this time? I can’t bear to listen to him again
There is a knock at the door-
SAM
You get it.
AMY
Fine…
Amy rushes to the door and opens it. An Elderly woman is standing in the doorway. She is hunched and uses a stick to walk.
OLD WOMAN
Is this the Angel Detective Agency?
AMY
Yes. Come on in, take a seat. I’ve just finished making tea. I’ll pour you a cup.
OLD WOMAN
Thanks dear. I’m Glynnis by the way.
Amy returns to the kitchen as Glynnis enters the living area. Her walking stick scratches loudly against the floor. Sam neatly folded his paper and placed it on the table. He stood to greet her, taking her coat and walking stick. A minute later Amy returns from the kitchen carrying a tray which she places in the middle of the table and sits in the armchair beside Sam.
SAM
I’m Sam Garner and this is my colleague Amy. Is there anything we can help you with? You do know what it is we do?
GLYNNIS
You investigate strange things don’t you?
AMY
Yeah that’s right. Have you noticed anything strange?
GLYNNIS
Indeed I have, let me tell you. It was last night; I was sitting reading a good murder mystery. Then I went into the kitchen because I was feeling hungry, and the floor was soaking. I had to use all my towels to dry it. That was annoying, I wanted to have a nice hot bath, but I had no towels left. Anyway I went to bed. Then when I woke up again the whole kitchen was flooded, with at least two inches of water.
Sam and Amy exchange a confused glance
SAM
It’s probably just a broken pipe.
GLYNNIS
No, it wasn’t. That’s the thing. My nephew come round early this morning, he’s very smart. He checked all the pipes and said there were no leaks.
SAM
I’ll give you that it sounds strange, but I don’t think it’s the type of case we cover. Sorry.
GLYNNIS
I should’ve known. Nobody wants to help and old lady like me. You needn’t worry, I’ll be dead soon. The stress of this is going to give me a heart attack I tell you. Do you want that on your consciences?
AMY
Sam will come round later and have a look for you, see if he can find out what caused it.
GLYNNIS
Thank you dear. Here’s my address.
Glynnis hands Amy a piece of paper with her address on it. She picks up her own coat and walking stick and slowly exits the room. Amy follows her and closes the door as she leaves. As soon as the door is closed Sam shouts form the living area.
SAM
Sam will come round later… thanks for that Amy.
AMY
Well maybe you’ll not be so lazy next time and answer the door yourself.
INT. MRS. JONES HOUSE
Mrs Jones is mopping the floor when a knock on her door startles her. In a fluster she rushes to the door knocking into the mop bucket sending water across the floor. She opens the door to find Detectives Taylor and McKenna.
SEAN
Hi Mrs. Jones, if it is ok with you we would like to ask you some question about this morning.
MRS. JONES
Oh. Yes. Yes of course. It’s a terrible shame, absolutely horrible. I can’t get the image out of my head. Oh forgive my manners do come in.
The two men enter the house and take a seat on one of the armchairs in the living room. The room is old fashioned with lots of china on display. Mrs. Jones sits in the armchair facing the window, she is visibly shaken
PHIL
Sorry to have to put you through this again, but can you tell me exactly what happened.
MRS. JONES
I was clearing the bins out in the alleyway over there. I heard a shuffling noise behind me, one of those blasted rats. I turned and there he was. Oh the shock of it. Poor Jonathan his face was as white as a sheet, with the rats crawling all over him. I screamed until someone heard me. Then we got the police and you know what happened from there.
SEAN
Thank you Mrs Jones. I know it’s a long shot, but did you see anyone going down that alleyway in the last day or so.
PHIL
Specifically anyone carrying a large object
MRS. JONES
The only person I seen go down that alley was Jonathan himself. He almost walked past it, but then he changed his mind and went down it.
SEAN
Do you remember anything after that Mrs. Jones? If you did it could be very helpful.
MRS. JONES
Indeed I do dear. A few minutes later there was a loud scream and I saw a young girl running from the alleyway.
PHIL
This girl, if we got you an artist down could you describe her well enough for us to get a sketch. That would be very helpful.
MRS. JONES
It was dark, and my sight isn’t what it used to be. But I could give it a shot. Anything to bring justice to the monster that did this to Jonathan. A saint: that man was.
SEAN
You’re a star Mrs. Jones. Is there anything else you can tell us.
MRS. JONES
No one entered or left that alleyway for the next three hours. I was sat right here in this chair watching until I fell asleep.
PHIL
So he was killed in the alleyway then.
SEAN
How is that possible
INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY
Amy and Sam are still arguing about whether Glynnis’ is worth their time.
SAM
There are better things we could be doing.
AMY
Like what? She’s the only person to come to us this week.
As if fate had been tempted, no sooner had Amy finished speaking when there was another knock on the door. Without being told, this time Sam rushed to greet their newest client. He returns to room with Jane O’Donnell, 47, an eccentric woman with wild curly blonde hair and a questionable but colourful dress sense.
JANE
Thank you for seeing me. I needed to talk to someone about it. People think I’m crazy, but let me tell you I am not crazy.
AMY
There’s no judgement here. Trust me, with what I have seen, nothing sounds crazy
JANE
I find that hard to believe dear. How about pillars of fire in New York City? Would you believe that. Or is that too much for you?
SAM
Of course, that’s exactly the sort of thing we specialise in. Can you tell us where?
JANE
Are you winding me up? This is usually where people call me mad. You can’t fool me.
AMY
You don’t have to tell us if you don’t want to, but I’d say we are the only people in the city who will actually hear you out.
JANE
Okay! It was in the park across from our house, it was my son who seen it first. I didn’t believe him. I thought he was still high. He has drug issues bless him. He was smoking weed in the house at the time so you could forgive me for not believing him. But then I looked out the window and saw it with my own two eyes. It was beautiful. Scary, but beautiful
AMY
Ok. We can look into it if you want. We are going to need your address too.
JANE
Thank you.
After writing the address on a piece of paper she skipped out of the room closing the door behind her. Amy and Sam struggle not to laugh.
AMY
Did that actually just happen?
SAM
I wouldn’t be surprised if she was high herself. I think I’ll go chase up both cases now. See you in a few hours.
EXT. NEW YORK – STATIONWAGON
Detectives Taylor and McKenna are in their car driving back to the station. Sean is driving whilst his partner has his feet on the dashboard and is smoking his pipe. He is watching Sean intently
PHIL
I know that face, you’re thinking about something aren’t you?
SEAN
It’s not like anything we’ve ever seen before. It doesn’t add up
PHIL
It has to. The boss is putting pressure on us.
SEAN
You think we can solve it?
PHIL
You don’t?
SEAN
I think we can. But we might need a little outside help.
PHIL
Outside help? That goes against every policing instinct
SEAN
I know, but we can trust this guy. He specialises in cases like these
PHIL
You can’t be serious. Not him.
SEAN
Hear me out. You don’t even know who it is yet.
PHIL
Fine, tell me. But if you say Sam Garner, I’ll kill you.
Sean looks round and Phil momentarily taking his eyes off the road. A horn sounding brings his attention back as they serve to avoid a collision. Once clear Sean slams the break stopping the car and lets out a sigh of relief.
PHIL
Easy there fella, I don’t actually want us dead.
SEAN
Sorry.
PHIL
Relax, it wasn’t your fault. We’ll go see Sam if you want to. I owe you one from last time anyway.
SEAN
Can you drive? I’m a little shaken.
PHIL
Of course. Do you need a sugar hit before we go? Stress isn’t good for your blood glucose.
INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY
Amy is startled from a half sleeping state by the sound of a key in the door. She checks her watch realising it is too early for Sam to be back. The fumbling sound continues until it eventually gives up. There is a shout from the other side of the door.
RORY
Amy are you there? I’ve lifted the wrong key again.
Amy laughs and walks over to the door.
AMY
I’m here. But I’m not letting you in.
RORY
Stop playing around. I’m not in the mood.
AMY
Alright grumpy pants, I’ll let you in.
Amy opens the door and goes to try to hug Rory. He walks on ignoring her, she cannot see that he has been crying and his eyes are red. He enters the office and picks Sam’s notes off the chair throwing them onto the table with a thud. After a few seconds his intrigue gets the better of him as he opens and skim reads them. Amy is standing in the doorway watching.
RORY
What’s this?
AMY
It’s a case we took on today.
RORY
Doesn’t seem worth your time.
AMY
There’s reason to investigate
RORY
Is this what you do now?
AMY
What’s that supposed to mean?
RORY
You know what I mean. We both know why you do this. But you need to realise, you won’t find him in unexplained floods or pillars of fire.
AMY
This isn’t just about him, it’s about me. You know that better than anyone. You know ever since I was a kid and the raggedy doctor dropped out of the sky, I dreamt of saving the world with him. We were lucky enough to actually get to do that, you me and him. But now he’s gone, and that’s ok. I still have the most important man in life standing right in front of me.
RORY
Oh Amy, you know I’ll support you no matter what. I just don’t want you to get hurt chasing shadows.
AMY
I know I can always count on you.
There is an awkward silence as they both take a moment to gather themselves.
AMY
Don’t you miss him?
RORY
All the time. But that can’t be helped.
They embrace each other as Rory begins to cry again.
RORY
If we were doing what we do for him, I’d have let him down today.
AMY
What do you mean?
RORY
I lost them Amy. My patients.
AMY
What happened?
RORY
Some electrical surge in the cardiac ward, interfered with their pace makers.
AMY
How many?
RORY
All six on the ward.
AMY
Oh god Rory I’m so sorry. I’m sure you did everything you could. You can’t blame yourself.
RORY
It is my fault; they wouldn’t have had pacemakers if it wasn’t for me.
AMY
No, you can’t say that. How many lives has your medical knowledge saved? You can’t beat yourself up when it goes wrong once.
RORY
I know, I know. But I’m still devastated about it.
AMY
Of course you are patients you were close to died. It’s normal for you to grieve them, but getting angry at yourself isn’t going to fix it. Pick yourself up and get back out and save more lives.
RORY
You always know what to say don’t you?
AMY
That’s why you come here isn’t it.
RORY
No…
AMY
Yes it is
RORY
Ok. Yes. It is. Happy now?
Sam appears in the doorway, they are shocked to see him as they didn’t hear him coming in. When he sees Rory he appears surprised.
SAM
Hi Rory. Am I interrupting something? Amy when you’re done I really need to speak with you?
AMY
Sam it will have to wait. We’re kind of having an important conversation.
RORY
No, no it’s fine. Fire away Sam. I could be doing with a distraction.
SAM
Ok well I was investing the two reports from earlier, turns out there was nothing which could logically explain either phenomenon. What’s more interesting was I heard a few stories in the area. One complaining of winds blowing the windows open despite the fact it was a still day this morning. And then there was the pond in the park where the pillar of fire was spotted, frozen completely solid.
AMY
So four strange cases: fire, ice, water and wind. How do we investigate Mother Nature?
RORY
Freak weather happens all the time; it doesn’t have to be alien. That said, first thing I noticed when I looked at the file, the locations are incredibly close.
SAM
As are the two new cases, so were thinking it’s something alien? I’m still not convinced but I’ll go along with it.
RORY
Amy, did we ever encounter anything like this when we were with the Doctor.
AMY
Not on Earth, no. No species capable of doing it either.
RORY
Well it’s close to the hospital. I’ve got to head back to work soon.
AMY
Back? I thought you were off night shift this week.
RORY
I was but Steve’s sister is giving birth, he asked me to cover his shift.
AMY
Well tell Steve I’ll let him off with it this once. But next time he’ll have to answer to me.
RORY
Will do. As I was saying, why don’t you come with me and you can investigate the scene see if you find anything suggestive of alien activity.
SAM
Won’t work, there was a murder this morning. Cops have most of the area closed off. You won’t get anything done tonight.
There is a knock on the door and all three heads turn towards its source. Amy who is closest exits the room to open the main door of the office. As she does she is greeted by a figure wearing black racing attire completed with a black helmet. The figure reaches out and grabs Amy’s wrist. Amy gasps as they both vanish with a small crackle of static electricity.
EXT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY
The Station Wagon pulls up in the car park opposite the building. Detective McKenna effortlessly reverses it into a tight space between two pillars.
PHIL
Are you sure about this? We know Garner’s history isn’t exactly immaculate. He’s a known alcoholic and half the stuff he goes on about sounds like absolute poppycock, it’s like he doesn’t even convince himself.
SEAN
He’s an old friend. I think we can trust him. You know how stories are, exaggerated for effect.
PHIL
Is this the right building?
SEAN
I think so, we’re looking for an Angel Detective Agency.
PHIL
Agency? You mean there’s more than one whack job?
SEAN
Yes, definitely the right place.
INT. ANGEL DETCTIVE AGENCY
The Detectives enter the Angel Detective agency. As they get to the door they see that it is open. Instinctively they draw their weapons and assume a tactical position with Detective McKenna leading and Detective Taylor standing just off his shoulder. Detective McKenna knocks the door and calls out.
PHIL
Hello. NYPD. Is anyone there?
Rory apprehensively exits the room and steps into view of the main doorway. He is shocked to see the two armed police officers and puts his hands behind his head. Satisfied he is not a threat Detectives Taylor and McKenna lower their weapons. Sam comes out too to see what the commotion is.
RORY
Where is Amy?
SEAN
Who is Amy?
RORY
I’ll ask again. Where is my wife?
PHIL
How would we know?
SAM
She went to the door literally two minutes ago to answer it. You’re bound to have seen her?
SEAN
Sam we didn’t see anyone. I promise you, no one has entered or left this building in the last few minutes. As you say we would have seen them
RORY
That’s not possible. Then who was at the door.
SAM
You don’t think there’s foul play involved do you?
RORY
Can you smell that? The air smells burnt. You can taste it too. Try it.
PHIL
Ok I think you may have had one too many sir. You’ve probably had an accident in the kitchen.
RORY
No. I know what this is, this is teleport exchange residue. Someone has taken her.
PHIL
Jesus Christ. Teleport exchange residue. Sorry Sean I gave them a chance but this is utter bollocks
SEAN.
You’re right. I wasn’t expecting this. Let’s head back to the precinct. We can solve this on our own.
As the Detectives go to leave, Rory grabs Sam’s coat and hands it to him.
RORY
Go after them. Find out what they wanted. If this is all connected I want to know everything.
SAM
What about Amy.
RORY
Leave that to me.
INT. SPACESHIP – HIGH ABOVE EARTH
Amy is shocked by the sudden change in her surroundings. She is in the control room of a medium sized spaceship. There is a gentle hum and she can feel the vibrations of the engines transmitting through the floor beneath her feet. The room is made up of subtle curves and sweeping blue architecture lined with red and green lights. The lights flash almost as if dancing in tandem towards the driver’s chair at the front of the ship. The chair is black and appears to be made of leather; her captor almost blends in with it. The helmet has been removed to reveal a beautiful woman with scaly purple skin and locks of curly green hair. She is an Elemental.
AMY
Who are you? Why did you bring me here?
ELEMENTAL
Apologies, I do not mean you or your planet any harm. My name is Daisy. I am an Elemental. I need your help.
AMY
Well you could have asked for it instead of kidnapping me.
DAISY
Yes I do realise that. However you must realise that it was impossible to meet under your terms. The Oxygen levels in your atmosphere act as a narcotic for our species.
AMY
So coming to Earth is like a drug for you?
DAISY
Exactly, hence the use of the suit and teleportation to facilitate our discussion.
AMY
You said you needed my help. What could I possibly do for you?
DAISY
My daughter, Poppy, she is on earth, lost in your city. She’s so young and her first ever relationship ended nastily. She didn’t cope well and she headed to Earth to try to forget the pain. She was gone before I could stop her. Please, will you bring me back my fallen angel?
AMY
I will do everything I can to bring her back to you safely.
DAISY
Thank you Mrs. Pond, I can see from your eyes that you are a mother. Imagine the thought of losing your child. I know I can trust you with my Poppy.
AMY
How do you know my name, I haven’t used that since…
DAISY
Wait, I sense sadness in you. You’ve lost a child haven’t you, and you aren’t able to have any more?
AMY
You could say that. My daughter is very much alive though, I still see her from time to time. But it’s complicated and I don’t really want to talk about it.
DAISY
I respect that Amelia Pond, but know that you can stop another mother from feeling how you do. I beg you to help me.
AMY
I promise I will do everything in my power.
DAISY
Thank you Amy, but be careful. She will not be able to control her powers, she isn’t fully matured and on top of that she’s drugged up. I will give you a signal device. When you find her, I will come and take her home.
AMY
Her powers?
DAISY
She is an Elemental; our species is entirely female and are named after the flowers of the universe. We possess the unique ability to manipulate the fundamental elements of whatever planet we find ourselves on.
AMY
By elements do you mean Fire, Water, Air and Earth? Because if you do, I think I know how to find her.
DAISY
Indeed. It’s time I return you to your planet. Every minute Poppy spends there she is in danger. Good luck. I hope we see each other again soon.
Daisy hands Amy a small box with a red button, the signal device. She then flicks some switches on the control panel of the ship and Amy disappears in similar manner to what occurred on Earth.
EXT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY
The Detectives are already in their car by the time Sam reaches the door of the Angel Detective Agency building. This time it is Detective Taylor who is driving. Before he can get the car out of the tight parking space Sam is beside him blocking their exit. Sam knocks on the driver’s window, but the detectives ignore him. He raps again a little more forcefully leaving Detective Taylor with no choice but to roll down the window.
SEAN
What do you want Sam? Can’t you see we are busy?
SAM
You obviously came here for a reason. What was it?
PHIL
We were looking a consult for a case, but we realised it was pointless taking it to a bunch of people who talk about vanishing girls and teleports.
SAM
Look, you may not agree with my methods, but you can’t deny my results. I get the job done and I’ll believe what I’m paid to believe.
SEAN
He does have a point.
PHIL
No, don’t let him persuade you. This is a police enquiry, we don’t want civilians jeopardising the case.
SAM
Look Sean, you know me, you know the situation with Alice. You could tell me the sky is green and I’ll go along with it. So if you need me to help you with your case, don’t let that deter you.
SEAN
Phil, we’re not getting anywhere with this by ourselves. A fresh set of eyes would do no harm. What do you think?
PHIL
I’m not in love with the idea, but one crime scene photo couldn’t do any harm could it.
Detective McKenna searches in his briefcase for a black and white photo of the crime scene which he had picked up from the precinct on his lunch break. He hands it to Detective Taylor who then passes it to Sam. Sam studies it intently.
SEAN
Ok Sam, there was a murder late last night or the early hours of this morning. Victim was a Jonathan Cahill, did you know him?
SAM
I’ve heard of him, but didn’t know him personally. What happened?
SEAN
Basically we found him like that, multiple stab wounds, no signs of blood.
SAM
So he was dumped here then.
PHIL
No that’s the strange part; witnesses place him as alive walking into the alley. Then they reported nothing until a scream and a young girl running from the alley.
SAM
Any identification on the girl yet?
SEAN
Not yet, we have a sketch artist on it as we speak.
Detective McKenna checks his watch and is surprised at how late it has got. Sam noticing the cue to hurry up goes to hand the photo back in through the window.
PHIL
Look at the time, the sketch should nearly be finished by now. It’s okay, keep the photo Sam we have more.
SAM
Thanks, I’ll let you know if I find anything.
Sam stuffs the photo into the pocket of his coat and runs across the road re-entering the Angel Detective Agency building. The Station Wagon manoeuvres its way out of the tight car parking space and drives off in the direction of the precinct.
PHIL
Let’s hope this doesn’t come back to bite us.
SEAN
Give Sam a bit of credit, I don’t think it well.
PHIL
Hurry up, I fancy getting home at some stage tonight.
SEAN
You and me both partner.
INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY
Sam returns to the room as Rory is still examining the doorway.
SAM
Any news on Amy?
RORY
Nope.
There is a crackle of static discharge as Amy appears in the spot from which she had disappeared not moments before. Unaware of how close she is standing to Rory, she accidently whacks him around the head with her elbow.
AMY
Hello boys, did you miss me.
RORY
Where the hell were you?
AMY
Space
SAM
No seriously, don’t joke around, where were you?
AMY
I think I can solve all our cases in one go. The knock on the door was a client, but not one from this planet. She told me her daughter is lost in New York and she wants us to bring her back safely.
SAM
Ok. Aliens and Space, can this day get any weirder.
RORY
You get used to it, trust me. What type of alien?
AMY
An Elemental, a humanoid being which is capable of manipulating their surroundings at will. So the pillar of fire, the flood, frozen ponds and the wind must all have been her.
INT. PRECINCT- GROUND FLOOR
The Detectives enter the precinct through the main door. There is a desk with an elderly man sitting behind it. He is Stuart a 60 year old man with short neat grey hair and a large pair of spectacles. He is the night desk clerk who interacts with the public.
STUART
Working late tonight gentlemen?
PHIL
Duty calls.
STUART
Would help if the rest of them shared that attitude, majority of your division has gone home for the night.
SEAN
Boss still here Stuart?
STUART
Yeah he is. He never leaves the office these days. Mind you, he’s in a pretty foul mood so unless you’ve got some good news I’d try to stay clear.
SEAN
Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully you don’t get too many whackos tonight, there’s a big game, so who knows what’s going to happen.
The Detectives head towards the stairs located at the back of the building, they are halted by a shout from Stuart.
STUART
Detective McKenna, I almost forgot. Your sketch artist asked me to tell you that the results are on your desk.
PHIL
Thanks. If you need us, we’ll be on the walkie talkie until we leave.
They head up the stairs to the Homicide Bullpen.
INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY
SAM
So how do we find her?
AMY
We follow the trail, any strange activities. Plot a course on the map.
Rummaging through the filing cabinet, Sam produces a fold up map of New York City. He folds it in such as was as the area of interest in on the top and places it on the table. Amy inserts a pin onto each of the locations in question. They are relatively ambiguous with no clear pattern yet.
SAM
Damn it, they’re in a square shape, how do we know what way she is going?
INT. PRECINCT – HOMICIDE BULLPEN
As they enter the Bullpen, they notice Cathal standing in front of the murder board, a wooden board with pictures relevant to the case pinned to it. Pieces of coloured thread link pictures as if drawing together ideas. Altered by the sound of the door closing he turns to see its source. When he realises it is Detectives Taylor and McKenna he gestures for them to join him at the murder board.
CATHAL
No motive, no method, no suspects. I’ve been looking into this case all day and haven’t got anywhere. Please tell me you’ve got something.
PHIL
Very little guv, everything we uncover just seems to raise more questions.
CATHAL
Same with me, I guess I can say goodbye to the Commissioner’s Job.
SEAN
We do have the witness seen running from the alleyway. The sketch is on Phil’s desk.
He reaches over the desk and picks up the sketch which is enclosed in a brown envelope. He offers it to Cathal who refuses to take it off him.
CATHAL
Is this really all you have got? If we haven’t found the actual murder site yet, what’s the point in a witness?
PHIL
From what we’ve gathered the murder site is the alleyway. Yes it begs a lot of questions, but we can place the victim alive in the alleyway.
A crackling from the walkie talkie interrupts their conversation. Stuart’s voice can be heard.
STUART (Via Walkie Talkie)
Guys, I could be doing with a little help down here. I’ve got a member of the public in distress.
Cathal picks up the Walkie Talkie from the desk and replies.
CATHAL
Roger that, I’ll send the detectives down to you now.
Taking his hand off the transmission button he continues, addressing the Detectives.
CATHAL
Well hurry, I’m not paying you to stand around.
INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY
Sam, Amy and Rory are still sitting in silence trying to come up with anything which will help them determine where the Elemental is going.
AMY
Think any other cases which could fit the description. Anything odd, anything you’ve seen, anything you’ve felt.
SAM
Well there is this murder case the two detectives are investigating.
Sam places the photo on top of the map so as Amy and Rory can see it.
SAM
Multiple stab wounds yet now sign of blood. It’s confirmed however that this was indeed the murder location
AMY
We’re looking for a young girl. I’m not sure a murder fits. Although her mother did warn me that she may not be able to control her powers.
RORY
No blood isn’t that unusual, if the weapon was left in the wound until the blood clotted then in theory the person wouldn’t bleed.
SAM
That can’t be it. Look at the number of stab wounds. And in that case the weapon would have been found in the alleyway too, which it wasn’t.
RORY
Are you sure about that? Look at the picture again with the knowledge we’ve just gained
SAM
Not sure what I’m meant to be seeing.
AMY
Me neither. Enlighten us.
RORY
Ok well we’ve got an Elemental on the loose. Assuming someone disturbed her, made her feel threatened, she may have attacked. Of all her powers, ice would do the most damage. Shards of Ice could stab, cause the damage and then melt away.
SAM
It makes sense, but surely it’s a guess at best. And we can hardly take it to the police; they already think we are insane.
RORY
It’s not a guess; it was cold last night but quite warm this morning. Perfect to allow the ice to seal the wound and prevent bleeding but melt away to nothing as the sun comes up.
AMY
I like your logic, but how do we prove it?
RORY
Simple, it didn’t rain last night, rare for this time of year. So if it didn’t rain where did the water in the crime scene come from? There are no pipes around.
SAM
The water is the weapon. So we can put a pin on the map.
RORY
As I was coming out of the hospital there was a quake, almost like an earthquake but not strong enough to called a true one. Could that have been her too.
AMY
Most likely yes.
Amy adds too more pins to the map making it slightly clearer as to what path the girl has taken. Amy gasps with realisation
SAM
What? What is it?
AMY
Rory, I’m sorry to do this, but the times fit.
RORY
What do you mean?
AMY
An electrical surge on the Cardiac Ward, it was most likely her; she’d have been passing the hospital at that stage.
RORY
Oh god so it was my fault.
AMY
No it wasn’t. How could it possibly be your fault?
SAM
So what does that mean? Where’s she heading next? From the looks of it, she is going to the precinct.
AMY
Shit. We’ve got to get to her before the police find her. She’s the murderer they are looking for.
RORY
We can’t let them get to her. Enough people have died already. I’m not having another one.
SAM
What do we do?
AMY
Head down there, see if we can find her. And then if we do I signal her mother who will take her home.
They quickly leave the building with Amy taking her stun-gun from the safe.
INT. PRECINCT – GROUND FLOOR.
The Detectives run down the stairs two at a time and sprint down the corridor. When they arrive in the main reception area, they see Stuart not at his desk, but sitting in the seats where the public wait to be served with a young girl in the seat beside him. The girl is tall and slender; she has long blonde hair and eyes of the deepest blue. Her hair is filled with dirt and debris, her eyes are red from crying and her clothes are torn as if she had been sleeping rough. She is intermittently sobbing.
STUART
Sorry to drag you down I had no idea what to do.
SEAN
Get her a cup of tea and a blanket; we’ll take her into one of the interview rooms where she’ll be more comfortable.
Detective McKenna kneels down so he is addressing the girl at her level.
PHIL
Hello. I’m Detective McKenna. You can call me Phil. We are going to look after you is that ok?
The girl slowly looks up examining Phil before deciding that he seems genuine.
GIRL
Yes. Thank you Phil.
PHIL
What’s your name?
GIRL
Poppy.
SEAN
That’s a nice name.
Detective McKenna holds the door of the interview room open for Poppy to enter, once she is inside, Detective Taylor uses the opportunity to talk to his partner in a whisper so as she can’t hear.
SEAN
I think it’s best if you take this on your own.
PHIL
You’re right, she’s just a young girl, and we wouldn’t want to scare her by overwhelming her.
SEAN
I’ll be on the other side of the glass if you need me.
Detective McKenna enters the interview room and sits across the table from Poppy while Detective Taylor watches through the one way glass from outside.
PHIL
Do you mind if I ask you a few questions. You’re not in any trouble. I just want to figure out how to get you home.
POPPY
I don’t want to go home.
PHIL
Ok, I won’t force you to do anything you don’t want to. But can you tell me why you don’t want to go home?
POPPY
Because it hurts.
PHIL
What do you mean? Is someone hurting you at home?
POPPY
No, I don’t mean that, no one is hurting me. My boyfriend cheated on me and being at home reminds me of the pain.
PHIL
I’m sorry to hear that, but it’s never a good idea to run away from your problems.
POPPY
Don’t tell me what to do.
PHIL
Ok well is there anything we can actually do for you?
Outside the interview room, Detective Taylor is starting to get bored. He realises that he is still holding the envelope with the sketch so decides to open it. Shocked at the similarity between the sketch and the girl in the interview room he holds the sketch against the wall to allow him to compare. Once satisfied that they are he knocks vigorously on the glass to attract his partner’s attention.
EXT. PRECINCT – Late Evening
Amy, Sam and Rory reach the precinct out of breath from running the short distance between the Angel Detective Agency building and here.
SAM
What do we do if the police already have her?
AMY
I don’t know, but we need to get Poppy out of the station, we can’t have her mother teleporting in and out of a police precinct.
RORY
Isn’t what we are about to do slightly illegal.
SAM
Yes, but we don’t have much choice. My plan is to say that I have solved the case, and then we’ll pretend you’re her mother Amy and hopefully they’ll let you take her home. Rory you’ll have to wait here, too many of us would look suspicious.
AMY
That won’t work, how are you going to solve the case?
RORY
To be fair we don’t have a better plan
SAM
I’ll just have to come up with something
Amy follows Sam into the precinct leaving Rory standing alone. Rory buttons the top button of his coat to keep the developing chill off his neck.
INT. PRECINCT – FIRST FLOOR
Amy and Sam enter the precinct as Detective McKenna emerges from the interview room.
PHIL
What the fuck are they doing here?
SAM
I’ve come to tell you that I have solved the case you came to me with.
SEAN
We’re about to too Sam. Phil, the girl, she’s the girl from the crime scene. You need to go back in there and ask her some real questions.
AMY
No don’t, she’s very fragile. Please she’s been through enough recently.
PHIL
And who are you?
SAM
This is Poppy’s mother; she’s been going insane looking for her. She’d come to me earlier in the week asking for my help, so when you mention a girl seen fleeing from the crime scene I put two and two together.
SEAN
Ok but we still need to talk to her. She can sit in on the interview with Phil if you think that would help.
AMY
Yes, that would be great. It would be better if you just let me take her home.
PHIL
Yes of course, I’d love to but I really do need her help with a criminal inquiry.
SAM
Actually I don’t even think it is criminal. I investigated the alleyway and with a little help from Rory I was able to figure out what happened.
SEAN
Tell us then?
SAM
Whatever happened in that alley the only person to leave after Mr Cahill entered was Poppy. That means he had to have died there. How does someone get stabbed and not bleed? As Rory pointed out, it’s only possible if stabbed by ice. The most obvious answer is that it was an accident. It was icicles falling from high. The business next door to the alley is a food company so they have large freezers.
SEAN
Any evidence for this?
SAM
Only the pool of water you found the body in.
PHIL
It’s a loose theory at best, but better than anything we have come up with. I’ll have to see what our witness says before I accept your theory though.
Amy and Detective McKenna enter the interview room while Sam and Detective Taylor look on from outside. Poppy looks up from the table to see the new arrivals, she smiles when she sees Amy.
PHIL
Poppy, before we start, this woman is claiming to be your mother. Can you confirm that?
There is a short silence as Poppy considers her answer. Amy is nervously tapping her shoe off the leg of the table and Sam is biting his nails as he watches on.
POPPY
Yes, she is. I told you I didn’t want to go home.
Amy tries to disguise a sigh of relief with a cough.
PHIL
Yeah, sorry about that, there are a few questions about a suspected murder that I want to ask you about. She wouldn’t let me without her being here. Are you ok with that?
POPPY
I will answer your questions. Yes.
PHIL
You know what I’m talking about don’t you?
POPPY
Yes.
PHIL
Can you tell me exactly what happened?
POPPY
I don’t know what happened, he just startled me. I didn’t know who he was; I thought he was going to hurt me.
PHIL
Ok that’s perfectly understandable. If you can, tell me what happened next.
POPPY
He tried to pick me up; I pushed him off and run away. I can’t remember anything else.
PHIL
One more question, was he alive the last time you seen him?
POPPY
I think so. I don’t know.
PHIL
Ok. I don’t think you are the person we are looking for. An attack like this if it was an attack would have required a lot of strength. You can go home with your mum.
POPPY
Are you implying that I’m weak?
The complexion of Poppy’s skin begin to chance as the warmth drains from her face and is replaced by a pale blue as she builds to attack. Amy who has been silently observing the interview decides to step in before things get dangerous.
AMY
He didn’t mean it like that. Come on, let’s go home.
Amy’s words are obviously effective as the colour returns to Poppy’s face. With everything settled, Detective McKenna stands and leads them out of the interview room. As Amy and Poppy walk off Sam goes to follow but is stopped by Detective Taylor.
SEAN
Sam. Can you stay a bit? I want you to show us your theory in the alley. Forgive me for saying so, but your theory does sound a little too far-fetched to be true.
AMY (muttering)
Shit.
Amy and Poppy leave the precinct without exchanging a word leaving Sam deep in conversation with the Detectives.
EXT. PRECINCT - Night
Rory is pacing to keep warm; it has got dark in the short time that he has been standing alone. He is happy to see Amy exit the precinct with Poppy in tow. He goes to join them, but Amy signals for him to keep his distance until she has a handle on things.
POPPY
Who are you? I only come with you because I wanted to find out. You’re not like the rest of them.
AMY
What do you mean?
Amy aware of the danger posed if Poppy were to lose her temper presses the button on the device given to her by Daisy. She places her other hand on her stun gun. Noticing her doing so, Rory does the same with his.
POPPY
You’ve travelled in time; I can smell it from you. So answer me this. Why are you here?
AMY
Erh…
POPPY
The truth, don’t try to fool me. I can tell if you are lying.
AMY
The truth is that your mother asked me to find you.
POPPY
Why can’t she just leave me alone.
Poppy raises her hands generating a strong wind which knocks Amy off her feet. She is now shaking with anger, this time her skin begins to go a deep red. Rory runs towards Amy and slides across the ground placing himself between Amy and Poppy. He hugs her tightly expecting the worst. Poppy releases a burst of fire from her fingertips. Before it can reach its target it is blocked by an ice shield. Poppy, Amy and Rory disappear in a crackle of static electricity as the teleport is initiated.
INT. SPACESHIP – HIGH ABOVE EARTH
When Amy and Rory open their eyes they are on the spaceship. Rory is shocked and starts to panic until he sees that Amy is familiar with the surroundings. Daisy is standing over Poppy who is slumped lifelessly in the pilot’s chair.
AMY
Is she ok?
DAISY
Yes, I’ve given her a short sedative, long enough to allow the effects of your atmosphere to wear off. She didn’t hurt you did she?
AMY
No, there were a couple of people who died though.
DAISY
I know, that is something Poppy will have to live with and something I will make sure she does not forget.
AMY
She said something, that she could smell time travel from me. Is that true?
DAISY
No, just was just teasing you. She knows who you are Amelia Pond, you too Rory Williams
RORY
How can she know who I am?
DAISY
How can you travel with the Doctor and not expect people to know who you are.
RORY
Travelled, past tense.
AMY
Yeah, we aren’t with him anymore.
DAISY
A pity, well I’m sure you’ll do just fine on your own. If there’s anything I can do for you don’t hesitate to say. You saved my child; I am forever in your debt.
AMY
Actually there is one thing you could do for us before you send us home.
DAISY
Anything you ask will be done.
EXT. ALLEYWAY – NEW YORK CITY – Night
Sam leads the detectives down the alleyway which is still closed to the public by the crime scene tape. They walk down the alley until the point where the body was found, once there they stop and look up. There are several sharp icicles formed on the underside of the fire escape of the adjacent building.
SAM
See, just as I told you. There’s your weapons right there.
PHIL
And how do you suggest that they ended up in our victim.
SAM
Stand back and watch closely.
Sam waits until the Detectives are clear from under the fire escape. Once they are, he produces his gun and hits the butt of it against the wall. The vibrations cause the icicles to come loose and drop to the floor where they shatter into a million pieces
SEAN
If that had made contact with a body it would certainly have pierced it.
SAM
Yes and these icicles only had since last night to form. There would have been much more recently.
PHIL
So the girl did effectively kill him by pushing him into the wall.
SEAN
Come on Phil, it’s not like she meant it. It was an accident.
PHIL
Right, well that’s it then cased closed.
SEAN
Someone needs to inform the boss. I think I owe Sam a drink though, you up for that Sam.
SAM
If you’re paying I’m drinking.
PHIL
I think I’ll give it a miss, get the case closed officially.
As the three men leave the alleyway, they are watched by a figure wearing black with their face hidden by a helmet standing on the rooftop at the edge of the alleyway. No one notices as it disappears with a slight static discharge.
INT. PRECINCT HOMOCIDE BULLPEN
Cathal is asleep as Detective McKenna enters the bullpen. He is startled slightly by the noise of the door opening but doesn’t properly waken until the detective gives his shoulder a gentle shake
CATHAL
What, what’s happening? Is something wrong?
PHIL
Nothing’s wrong. I just wanted to let you know you can go home, we got an answer for the case.
CATHAL
Oh good, who was it?
PHIL
It wasn’t anyone, it was an accident
CATHAL
What use is that to me? People will laugh if I tell them the highest profile case we have had all year was an accident.
PHIL
Well it’s the truth, and it’s why we do the job.
CATHAL
Fair point. Good work Detective McKenna, you can leave the paperwork until the morning.
PHIL
Thanks guv.
INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY
Amy and Rory are preparing to leave after being returned to the Angel Detective Agency by Daisy’s teleport.
AMY
It’s a pity you have to go to work again tonight.
RORY
Yeah well, I’m not too worried about it. Crazy day, it will be good to get my mind off it. Are you sure you’re ok walking home on your own.
AMY
Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?
RORY
No, yeah, of course. I’m sure you’ll be fine. See you in the morning.
AMY
Unless I’m attacked by an alien on the way home.
RORY
Don’t even joke.
AMY
Fine Mister Serious head, I’ll see you in the morning.
They set off in opposite directions against the bitter New York night.
INT. SPACESHIP – HIGH ABOVE EARTH
Poppy is slowly wakes up yawns and rubs her eyes. As she reflects on what has happened her the last few days a silent tear forms in her eye. She notices her mother sitting in the pilots chair watching her intently.
POPPY
Mum, I’m so sorry, I should never have run away.
DAISY
It’s ok. I should have realised how much pain you were in. I should have been there when you needed me.
POPPY
So I’m not in trouble then.
DAISY
You are in so much trouble young lady, people died. You do realise that don’t you.
POPPY
Yes, I never meant that to happen.
DAISY
Well it has now and it’s something well have to deal with. As for now, what do you say we go home?
POPPY
Before we go, there was something I heard on Earth. Is there another of our kind on that plane?
DAISY
None of us have visited Earth since Mother Nature herself. Why do you ask?
POPPY
Because I heard whispers, people are scared. I assumed the name Violet meant it was one of us.
DAISY
It’s a common name on Earth. I think at some point our tradition of flower names was imparted onto Earth’s history. Perhaps even in memory of Mother Nature.
POPPY
Can we go home now? It’s a long journey and I’m tired.
Daisy spins the driver’s seat so as she can activate the controls, she presses a few buttons and the ship accelerates with beams of blue light coming from each of the four wings. As the ship spins forward this light trail forms a helix of radiant light across the darkness of space.
