The Terror Within by Thomas Edwards
INT. Milverton’s spaceship – Milverton’s study – Night
Milverton is sat behind his desk, scribbling at a sheet of paper. He is old, but not ancient, with silver hair and a pointed beard. He is wearing a velvet suit. There is a knock at the door
MILVERTON
Enter.
Penda enters. She is young and quite pretty, wearing a white lab coat.
MILVERTON
Yes? What is it? What do you want? I am rather busy you know, the Emperor’s expecting these forms to be filled out by tomorrow.
PENDA
I know sir, but I’m afraid we have a rather urgent problem, if you wouldn’t mind?
MILVERTON
Very well, but make it quick, or I shall lock you in the engine room… again.
EXT. Alleyway – Night
The man runs down the street, not looking back. Suddenly he comes to a dead end, and desperately starts clawing at the brick wall.
MAN
No! No! Oh please God no!
Out of the fog at the other end of the alley we hear growling. It grows steadily louder as the man starts whimpering to himself, sinking to the floor. Out the mist a small figure appears, eventually becoming clear as that of a young girl, dressed in a flowery dress. She smiles eerily at the man.
GIRL
Come on, come and play with us, you’ll love it.
She starts to walk towards him, as he simply stares on in horror.
GIRL (cont.)
It’s so easy, all you have to do is let us bring you into the light. If you just let go and give in we can lead you from your petty life and allow you to dance in our eternal shadow.
MAN
You took my life! You can’t take much more.
GIRL
There is nothing worth taking, as was the case with this sweet little thing, as is the case with everyone else we have enlightened. All we wish to do is reshape you, remould you… repair you.
MAN
I don’t need fixing! You’re the one who’s broken.
The girl hisses and her mouth is now full of sharp fangs. Her eyes are glowing red and leaking black smoke and her hands are becoming claws.
GIRL
Join your daughter. Join her and live in our majesty. Join her and lose your pain, lose your weakness. Be content once more.
The man tries to stand, but the girl jumps on him, forcing him to the ground. He struggles against her but she easily resists, and puts her hands over his face. He struggles and screams as she smiles, her face now twisted, still that of a little girl but also that of a savage animal. Eventually he is still, although still taking in ragged breaths.
GIRL
That’s right, let go, let go and embrace the future.
He looks up at her with cold, red eyes.
MAN
I…can’t…I…no…please…aaaargh!
He spasms and is still again.
MAN
I embrace the shadow. We are the shadow.
INT. Milverton’s spaceship – Lab – Night
Milverton and Penda stood over a computer terminal, Penda looking concerned, Milverton captivated.
MILVERTON
Fascinating, truly fascinating. The infection is spreading, that’s for certain, but not as fast as you would have thought, given how strong it appears to be. Now why might that be?
PENDA
I…er, perhaps it doesn’t want to take over. Perhaps it prefers to, I don’t know, work in the shadows.
MILVERTON
Fantastic attempt at intelligence Penda, you’re nearly average now. Anyway, it was a rhetorical question, I was more giving myself time to think of the correct answer than asking for your quite frankly questionable input.
Penda looks mildly insulted as Milverton stands and begins to pace.
MILVERTON
Ah, of course! I understand now. It’s the minds. Keeping multiple complex, well, relatively complex, minds in check takes a lot of energy, and the energy gained from occupying the Human bodies is only just enough. They don’t want to over-exert themselves.
PENDA
That’s a good thing, yeah?
MILVERTON
Yes, excellent in fact. They’d need someone of exceptional bodily energy to have the power for a full-scale invasion. Beings like Time Lords, Arcateenians, Weeping Angels would be ideal, and given one’s extinct and one seems to have an aversion to this area, we shouldn’t have to worry about them too much. We’ll certainly have enough time to complete our research anyway.
PENDA
And Time-Travellers, I take it? They’d have enough energy?
MILVERTON
Yes, Penda, they would

Ext. Street Corner – evening
Amy is stood leaning against a lamp post, and she agitatedly checks her watch.
Amy
Come on. Hurry up.
A man rounds the corner. It is the same man from earlier, but now he is totally cold and expressionless.
Man
Mrs Williams?
Amy
Pond.
Man
I’m sorry?
Amy
Mrs Pond.
Man
Very well, Mrs Pond, I asked to meet you because I have a problem. I own a warehouse, for my business, and there was some sort of break-in three weeks ago. Now a smell fills the place. A horrible stench. Like boiled blood.
Amy
Lovely. Any idea what it is?
Man
None, although it must be something bad, quite possibly a body. I’ll pay you good money to find out what’s going on.
Amy
Well, it’s a bit basic compared to what I’m used to, but I’ll do it. Can I ask is there a particular reason you picked me for this? My rates are high and a lot of other detectives could do this easily.
Man
But we want you.
There is a pause.
Amy
We?
Man
Me and my wife, I mean.
He turns to leave, but Amy calls after him.
Amy
I need the address!
He turns back to face her.
Man
All the details are in this envelope.
He chucks it at Amy, who catches it easily.
Man
Please attend to this as soon as possible. It will be of great benefit to both of us if you do.
He walks away. Amy opens the envelope.
Ext. Street outside warehouse - night
Amy emerges from the shadows and walks towards a door. She tries the door. It’s locked. She pulls out the envelope and opens it, picking out a set of keys. She opens the door and steps inside.
Int. Warehouse - night
Amy
Hello?
There is no response.
Amy
Like that was ever gonna work.
She sniffs the air as she walks further inside.
Amy
Hmm, funny. Doesn’t really smell like boiled blood to me. I wonder what that man meant.
Voice
Perhaps you should be wondering if he is even a man…
Amy
Who said that? Who’s there?
Voice
We are the master of all. Our will shall be the will of every man, woman and child on this pathetic little rock. We shall reshape humanity to be the most prolific and efficient force in the galaxy. We are the future.
Amy pulls out a torch and uses it to look around, but she sees nothing.
Amy
Yeah, well mate, I’ve been to the future, and it sure isn’t prolific or efficient.
Voice
We know you’ve been to the future, that is exactly why you are here.
Amy
Why does me going to the future matter? If you think I’m going to give you information…
Voice
Your foreknowledge would be useless as we shall soon make it redundant. No, our requirements for you are more… physical.
Amy shudders.
Amy
What do you mean “physical”?
Voice
You have picked up background radiation from your travels through time, radiation which will be of… use to us. It will enhance our power, make us stronger, allow us to spread across the Earth in a matter of days.
Amy
What do you mean you’ll spread across the planet? What are you?
Voice
We are the future. We are every human’s future.
Amy
Well if you won’t answer that question properly, where are you?
Voice
Where we are is immaterial. We are in many places. But soon we shall be where you are.
Amy
How do you mean?
Voice
Soon we shall be you.
Suddenly a creature leaps from the shadows. It is half man and half monster, with green, dripping skin drawn taught over an angular skeleton. It has a human face, but a mouth full of fangs and deep, red eyes. It’s hands end in claws, and it still has a tie loosely strung around its neck, and a bowler hat on its head. Amy screams as it lands on her and grabs her face with its claws. She pulls her stun gun from her pocket but the creature swats it aside. The voice is heard again, coming from the creature.
Creature
Relax. Embrace the future.
Amy
NO!
Amy shoves the creature off of her and runs out of the door. The creature shouts after her.
Creature
It’s too late. We will be you. We are you. You are us.
Int. Angels Detective Agency – Night
Rory is pacing, whilst Sam is sat on a chair. Both are anxious, but Rory much more so.
Rory
Listen, she ought to be back by now.
Sam
So you keep saying, but maybe she got held up?
Rory
Maybe she needs our help…
Sam
Amy? Need our help? You gotta be kidding.
Rory
Well, who knows what might’ve happened?
Sam
It was a routine job –
Rory
Exactly. So why would she still be out there? And since when did we have routine jobs?
Sam
I’m sure that wherever Amy is she’s fine.
Ext. Alleyway – Night
Amy screams. Her hands are pressed against the side of her head, her eyes wide open, the centres of the pupils glowing red. Black smoke streams from her mouth. The alleyway is dissolving into mist. Everything has taken on a red sheen. She stops screaming and collapses to the ground.
Amy
Must… Warn… Rory…
Int. Milverton’s spaceship – Lab – Night
Milverton is sat working at a desk, and is approached by Pemba.
Penda
Er, excuse me sir?
Milverton
What is it? I’m busy.
Penda
Sir, it’s just that… you remember the thing we saw, the other night.
Milverton
What thing? Be specific!
Penda
The… entity. I’ve picked up some more activity from it.
Milverton
I told you not to worry about it. Our survey is nearly complete, then we can leave this planet to whatever fate it’s going to have to suffer.
Penda
The problem is… it’s found a time traveller.
Milverton
WHAT?!
Penda
I diverted some of our surveillance software to keep an eye on it –
Milverton
Without my permission.
Penda
I thought you’d disapprove.
Milverton
Which I do.
Penda
But if I didn’t, we wouldn’t know about the time traveller. She’s about middle-aged, human, and she’s fighting the transformation.
Milverton
How can she be a time-traveller? Unless… she must have come from the future.
Penda
Well, being a time traveller, that’s always a possibility.
Milverton
Was that sarcasm?
Penda
Certainly not sir. So, what do we do? Leave?
Milverton
We can’t leave, we haven’t finished the survey.
Penda
Surely our lives are more important than the survey!
Milverton
I’d be very careful who you say that to.
He glances around, making sure they are alone.
Milverton
As it happens I agree, but Captain Karesh would never allow it. He’s loyal to the empire to the point of ignorance. It seems we shall have to find a way to deal with this entity.
Penda
And how will we do that, sir?
Milverton
Well, we should treat it like an infection, and try to find a cure.
Penda
We’ll need a tissue sample.
Milverton
Don’t be a fool, Penda, we can’t take a tissue sample, it’s spread to us in seconds. We’ll use some long range bio analysis, if our scanners are up to it.
Penda walks over to a computer terminal and enters some data.
Penda
We should just be able to do it, but…
Milverton
But what?
Penda
We’ll have to temporarily call off the survey.
Milverton
We can restart it again once we’re done.
Penda
Captain Karesh won’t want any delays.
Milverton
I don’t give a damn what Karesh wants! We just won’t tell him.
Penda
If he finds out…
Milverton
Will he find out?
He walks towards her threateningly.
Milverton
Penda, will he find out?
Penda looks away from him.
Penda
No, sir.
Milverton
Good. Now, let’s get to it.
Ext. Street – Night
Rory and Sam are walking in a hurry, Sam looking slightly concerned and Rory looking worried sick.
Rory
Where is she?
Sam
No idea. It’s a big city.
Rory
Yeah thanks for that, I hadn’t noticed.
Sam
Just relax Rory, no need to get all sarcastic. It’ll be fine.
Rory
Are you worried about her at all?
Sam
Yeah. Actually, yeah I am. But I’m putting my head ahead of my heart, ‘cause if I don’t then we’ll both be running about like a pair of headless chickens, and never find her. So, where do you reckon she could be?
A sudden, loud scream is heard.
Rory
AMY!
Sam
RORY!
Rory sprints down the street, with Sam reluctantly following him.
Ext. Alleyway – Night
Amy is stood, spinning slowly, in the centre of a thick, black mist. Her mouth is wide in a silent scream. Her eyes are glowing a fierce red now.
Amy
No… please no… I don’t want to… No! I won’t be your puppet!
Cold laughter can be heard from in the mist. A dark figure can be seen walking towards Amy.
Amy
Who’s that? Who are you?
The figure emerges from the mist. It is the Doctor, or at least, he resembles him. His face and clothes are the same, but his tweed jacket is darker than usual, and his eyes glow red in the twilight. He grins, but not his usual, happy grin, but a cold, icy smile. He gently fixes his bow tie, before speaking in a whisper.
Amy is stood leaning against a lamp post, and she agitatedly checks her watch.

Amelia? Why are you scared?
Amy
Doctor… Doctor it can’t be you. Can it?
Doctor
Of course it can.
Amy
You look different.
Doctor
I feel different. Good different.
Amy
Doctor, there’s this thing. It’s gotten inside my head, I don’t know what it is… I’m scared, Doctor.
Doctor
Why, Amelia? It’s not a bad thing, not at all.
Amy
What… what do you mean? What the hell do you mean?
Doctor
Embrace is Amelia. Come on, just keep calm and embrace it.
Amy
Doctor. What’s happened to you?
Doctor
What’s happened to you? You’re not doing what I say Amelia. Why not?
Amy
But I don’t understand…
Doctor
Shh, just relax.
Amy
Relax?
Doctor
Relax. Let it fill you up. Let it consume you.
He puts a hand on her cheek. She recoils, but he holds onto her.
Doctor
Come along Pond.
Amy throws her head back and screams again, but when she brings her head down she is grinning, her eyes bright red and her mouth full of sharp fangs, leaking black smoke. The Doctor and the fog have gone. Rory is stood at the end of the alleyway.
Rory
Amy?
Amy
Hello, husband dear.
Sam runs into the alley and stands next to Rory.
Sam
Rory. That ain’t Amy.
Rory
But look at her, it is Amy it’s just… what the hell happened to you?
Amy
We embraced our part in the future, and now we will spread the shadow further across the world. Now we are strong enough to engulf this world, and all the world’s beyond!
Sam
Rory, we’ve got to get out of here!
Rory
We have to help her!
Sam
How the hell are we gonna do that? We’ve got to run.
Rory
But…
Sam
There’s nothing we can do, now run!
They both turn and run down the alley onto a street. Amy growls and follows them.
Ext. Street – Night
Rory and Sam run out into the reasonably busy street.
Rory
Where the hell do we go?
Sam
Anywhere! Just run!
Suddenly the doors to a large, imposing building opposite them opens swing open and a man steps out. He is middle-aged with dark hair, and he is wearing black military attire. He holds a black, sleek pistol in his hand, which he raises and points at Amy, who is emerging from the alleyway in a circle of smoke. People start screaming. Rory draws his stun gun.
Rory
Don’t you dare!
Sam
Rory, get back!
Sam drags Rory out of the line of fire, drawing his own pistol, as the man fires at Amy. A blue pulse shoots across the street and knocks her off her feet. A woman screams and faints. Amy falls backwards from the shock of the blast.
Rory
AMY!
Sam
Rory, come on!
More soldiers wearing a similar yet less official uniform to the first man, emerge through the doors. They are each holding the same weapon as their leader.
Soldier #1
Captain Karesh, what should we do about these civilians.
He gestures at the scarred looking men and women stood in shock around the street.
Karesh
Standard procedure. Wipe them.
Sam
No! Hang on a minute, we think we can help you.
Karesh
Members of a Level 4 civilisation? I doubt it.
Rory
We know about aliens, both of us, we’ve dealt with this sort of thing before.
Karesh
Rubbish. Wipe them.
Sam points his gun at Karesh’s head.
Sam
You wipe our minds and I’ll wipe yours. Permanently.
Karesh
Is that supposed to be frightening?
Sam
Yeah. Maybe.
Karesh
Well it’s not. My soldiers could drop you both before you could blink, never mind pulling that trigger.
Sam
Just listen to us for God’s sake. We want to help.
Karesh
Help? How?
Rory
Anything. Just please let us in.
Karesh pauses for a moment before nodding.
Karesh
Get in, and get in quickly. I suppose any help is good news.
Sam and Rory rush towards the door as Amy again emerges from the alleyway, not injured in any way. The soldiers fire at Amy and knock her to the floor again. One soldier presses a button on his watch and everyone in the street collapses to the floor.
Int. Karesh’s Base - Entrance Corridor – night
Rory and Sam are stood in a long, dark corridor as the soldiers hurry back inside, followed by Karesh.
Karesh
Close the doors.
They automatically close.
Karesh
So, what can you two tell us?
Rory
Well, um…
Sam
Er…
Karesh
Well that’s wonderful, mind if I take that down?
Sam
Sure, need a pencil?
Karesh is already typing on a small tablet computer he took from his pocket.
Karesh
Pencil?
Sam
Right…
Rory
OK, listen, we don’t know much about what’s going on, but something has happened to my wife, and I’d like to know what.
Karesh
That woman, she was your wife?
Rory
Yeah… Why?
Karesh
Our chief scientist says she’s the cause of all this trouble.
Rory
How do you mean?
Karesh
This entity required a time traveller to give it the energy boost that would allow it to come out into the open and launch a full-scale invasion of the Earth, which it is now doing.
Sam
Well is there a way to stop it?
Karesh
Our scientists are working on a cure.
Rory
Can I see?
Karesh
Why?
Rory
I’m a nurse, I understand medicine. Well, some of it anyway, I might be able to help.
Karesh
I think this might be a little beyond you.
Rory
Trust me, I’ve got experience with that too.
Karesh
OK, I’ll take you to see our scientist.
Sam
So who are you lot then?
Karesh
We’re the Biological Survey Society.
Rory
The B.S. Society?
Karesh
Indeed, that’s quite a good name for it, I might suggest that for use in the future.
Rory raises an eyebrow before Karesh gestures for he and Sam to follow him towards a lift.
Int. Karesh’s base – Lift - Night
Rory and Sam are stood on either side of Karesh as the lift starts to descend.
Rory
So what exactly do the B.S. Society do?
Karesh
We travel to different planets and try to survey all life forms on it. Obviously this is a difficult process due to the process of evolution, which as we understand it caused certain issues for another entity attempting to do what we are. However, the sheer size of the Society, with financial backing from the Emperor himself, means that we can update our logs on a planet every century or so, which is frequent enough for everything bar micro-organisms and certain Hyper-Evolving-Beings, such as Krillitanes and the Nevulax. Although luckily they’re extinct.
Sam
Fat lot of good evolution did them.
Karesh
Evolving to survive a supernova was apparently too tricky, even for them.
The lift stops.
Int. Milverton’s spaceship – airlock – night
It is clinical and cold, with bright white walls and no shadows. A circular door closes behind Sam, Rory and Karesh as they enter.
Karesh
This is our ship. We took possession of the building above in order to maintain a link with the outside world should we need it. Now it could prove to be a weakness. Come on, the labs are this way.
Int. Milverton’s spaceship – lab – night
Milverton is stood, mixing two chemicals together whilst Penda is sat at a computer terminal.
Penda
X39JT76KK66L45
Milverton
L45? That can’t be right.
Penda
It is sir.
Milverton
Have you checked?
Penda
Yes. Twice.
Milverton
Good God, L45. That means they’re resistant to plasmodic energy pulses.
As Milverton talks Karesh enters, followed by Sam and Rory.
Karesh
That would explain a lot, Professor.
Milverton
Captain Karesh? What are you doing here?
Karesh
Human volunteers. This one says he’s from the future, both have apparently encountered aliens before. They want to help.
Sam
Listen, I probably won’t be much good down here, but I’ve got a gun, I can head up top and lend a hand there.
Karesh
I’ll come with you, I won’t be able to help down here either.
He walks over to Penda.
Karesh
How’s it going?
Penda
Well. It’s going well, we’re making progress.
Karesh smiles warmly.
Karesh
Excellent. Don’t work too hard.
Penda
Try and stop me.
Milverton
Reading figures off a screen, hardly working hard. I’ve started gene-programming a potential cure, it should only take another hour.
Karesh
We’ll try and hold them off, we should be able to manage it.
Milverton
Hold them off?
Karesh
We had to fight one of them, she was getting too close. That’s how we came across these two.
Milverton
You engaged them in battle? Now they’ll be coming for us you fool!
Karesh
Don’t you dare call me a fool.
Milverton
I’ll do what I damn well like if you go about acting like a complete oaf. Now get up there and hold them back, or else we’ll all end up dead.
Karesh glares at Milverton for a moment before stalking out of the room. Sam turns to the door.
Rory
Sam!
Sam looks back to Rory
Sam
Yeah?
Rory
Take my stun gun too, it might be useful.
He chucks it to Sam, who nods and leaves. Milverton turns to Rory.
Milverton
So, what can you do?
Rory
Well… er… not much to be honest.
Milverton
Wonderful. Well, you can read off the information, I can note it down, and that leaves Penda to manufacture the cure, so we can speed up the process.
Int. Karesh’s base – entrance corridor – night
Karesh and Sam are stood behind a line of soldiers facing the doors as they shake and rumble, about to collapse. Sam is holding his pistol, Karesh Rory’s stun gun and the soldiers futuristic style taser weapons.
Karesh
Ever been in a fire fight before?
Sam
Yeah.
Karesh
Good, although as far as we know, none of them will be shooting at us, so fingers crossed this should be pretty one-sided.
Sam
I bet it’ll be one-sided.
Karesh
You don’t think we’ll be able to hold them back?
Sam
We don’t know if any our weapons are any good against them, and they don’t kill us. They make us change sides. It’s not gonna be an easy fight.
Karesh
There’s no reason why a bullet shouldn’t have an effect on them, which is why you’re weapon is easily the most valuable, and why you have to keep out of their reach.
Sam
What?
Karesh
If they look like they’re winning you retreat, you got that?
Sam
Captain, I don’t think I can –
Karesh
That’s an order.
Sam hesitates.
Sam
Yes sir.
Karesh
Good man. If we go down, you’re to fall right back and form the final line of defence between Milverton and those things. He needs to be protected.
Sam
OK.
Karesh
And Sam.
Sam
Yeah?
Karesh
Good luck.
They both nod to each other in quiet respect. Then –
Wipe them.

They both nod to each other in quiet respect. Then –
The doors explode outwards, shattering and burning. Instantly everyone starts firing as Amy, her skin glowing red and her mouth spewing smoke, leads a swarm of half-monster, half-human creatures through, with dark eyes and crooked limbs and swollen veins. Some are more mutated than others. They slow when hit by the tasers, but don’t fall, and continuously advance on the soldiers. Karesh’s stun gun is having no effect. Only Sam’s pistol is properly hurting them, but he only fires at their legs and shoulders, he doesn’t want to kill them. The creatures are dragging people down, black smoke pouring from them as the people scream before standing, slowly transforming into the creatures.
Karesh
Sam, run!
Sam hesitates before turning and running. Karesh turns to watch him go before a creature jumps on him and grabs his head. Sam watches in horror as Karesh’s screams pierce the air.
Int. Milverton’s spaceship – Milverton’s laboratory – Night
Milverton, Penda and Rory look up as Sam bursts into the lab. He’s panting and waving his gun frantically.
Sam
They’re in!
Milverton
Oh Christ!
Sam
There’s literally just that door between us and them.
Penda
How many?
Sam
Don’t know, everyone. I saw Captain Karesh go down.
Penda
Oh my God.
Milverton
But we’re not ready, we’ve hardly started working on the bloody thing.
Sam
You’ve been doing it for ages!
Milverton
Yes, we’ve got most of the codes ready, but we still need to actually mix it together, honestly I swear if I have to talk to another bloody primitive –
Sam
Call me a primitive one more time and I’ll shove this gun so far up your fu–
The doors explode outwards, sending Sam sprawling to the floor. Karesh walks through the door, eyes red, face twisted and blackened, arms bent out of shape. He roars savagely at them.
Milverton
Out! Get out!
Sam, Rory and Penda run for a door at the back of the lab, racing through it as Milverton chucks an empty beaker at Karesh’s head and follows.
Int. Milverton’s spaceship – Back staircase - Night
Milverton, Rory, Penda and Sam race down the stairs.
Milverton
I’ll admit I’ve always wanted to do that.
Penda
Can you please take this seriously?
Milverton
We’re dead already, no point wasting our time being serious.
Penda
Then what are we doing running away?
Milverton
I’ll show you.
Int. Milverton’s spaceship - Engine corridor – Night
Milverton, Rory, Sam and Penda enter a long and dark corridor, with pipes running the length of one wall and terminals along the other.
Rory
What the hell are we doing here?
Milverton
If I’m going to die, I’m going to die happy.
He walks over to a pipe and reaches behind it, groping for a second before pulling out a small bottle.
Milverton
A gift from the emperor himself. 100 years old, apparently.
He unscrewed the top and took a swig.
Rory
Unbelievable
Milverton offers the bottle.
Milverton
Anyone? You might as well.
Rory
Sam, can you kill him?
Sam
Actually I reckon he’s gonna do that.
Sam is pointing towards the door they ran through, from which Karesh is emerging. Milverton shrugs and takes another swig.
Penda
Professor, do something!
Milverton
Such as?
Penda
Fine! If you’re going to be pathetic and weak and not do anything, then I will!
Milverton
Good luck.
He sits down, leaning against a wall, and continues to drink. Sam raises his pistol as Penda walks towards Karesh.
Sam
Penda, get out of the way.
Penda
No. I think I can save him.
Sam
Penda, that’s not gonna happen, now get out of the way.
Penda
Just let me try.
Karesh grins callously as he walks towards her.
Penda
Captain? Captain Karesh? I know you’re still in there, sir.
Karesh
Oh, I’m here. This is it. This is me.
Penda
No it isn’t. Come on sir –
A pipe bursts next to Karesh, spraying him, and to a lesser extent Penda, in steam. He takes a step back, snarling in pain.
Sam
What the hell was that?
Milverton
They’re probably doing all sorts of damage up there.
He gestures above them before going on.
Milverton
This whole place could go up any second.
Rory
Oh, brilliant.
Milverton
On the bright side, that’s just cooling fluid, relatively harmless.
Penda
Captain Karesh! Listen, it’s me. You love me, remember?
Karesh’s smile slips slightly. His eyes begin to turn back to their normal blue.
Penda
Jagar? Jagar Karesh, this is not you, now come on! Break free!
Karesh throws back his head and screams before falling to the ground, his body returning to its original shape and colour. He looks up after a moment, looking drained but certainly himself.
Karesh
You saved me.
Penda
Yeah…I guess.
Milverton
So you basically talked him out of being one of their brainwashed mutating slaves? Was it really that bloody easy?
Karesh
It wasn’t just anyone talking me out of it. It was the person who mattered the most.
Sam
So therefore…
Rory
I could do the same to Amy.
Karesh
Amy?
Rory
My wife.
Karesh
You mean the time traveller? But that’s perfect!
Milverton
Of course, do you think it’s not too late?
Karesh
No, they’ve taken most of our crew, they’ve really overreached themselves.
Rory
Hang on, what do you mean?
Milverton
Your wife is a time traveller, she’s the reason they’re able to spread and grow in number so rapidly.
Karesh
Every person they take over lends them power, but it’s just enough to maintain a hold on that person and spread very slowly to others. But they’ve got to be careful. A time traveller gives them incredible amounts of energy, due to the background radiation picked up by their travels through the time vortex.
Milverton
If we take out the time traveller, the energy field snaps like an elastic band and the entity dies.
Sam
And the people’ll go back to normal?
Milverton
Depends how long they’ve been controlled for. Some might be too far gone.
Rory
So we’d better hurry up then.
Milverton
Agreed.
Rory
How are we going to find her?
Milverton
How should we know? She’s your wife.
Rory
Right, OK. Come on then.
Int. Milverton’s spaceship – Milverton’s laboratory – Night
Amy is stood in the centre of the lab, seething with red energy. Her eyes are black and empty and her face is twisted into a grin.
Amy
We grow now. We are growing so far and so fast. We are reaching into the minds of these pitiful humans and bringing new light. We shall have them all, and we shall use them to leave this world and travel the stars, and we shall grow within any and all people who dare defy us.
Rory (off-screen)
Amy Pond. It’s time I sorted you out.
He is stood behind her. He walks towards her as she turns to face him, whilst Sam, Penda, Milverton and Karesh emerge from behind him, but stay back, wary.
Amy
Another time traveller. This has all the makings of our lucky day.
Rory
I wouldn’t count on it.
Amy
And why’s that?
Rory
Come on. It’s me. The Last Centurion. The guy who waited 2000 years outside a box for you. That’s still got to mean something.
Amy
We are amused by your assumptions. You believe you can detach her from us? You think your words and your love can free her?
Rory
Yeah. It already happened to Captain Karesh, it can happen to you.
Amy
Prove it.
Amy grabs Rory and pulls him into a kiss. It is wild and passionate, and he doesn’t resist, clearly hoping it will change her. But instead it is changing him. His skin is reddening, his eyes darkening and red energy crackles over his body.
Sam
It’s not working.
Milverton
Just hold on a moment.
Sam
No, it’s really not working!
Penda
They weren’t strong enough…Oh my God.
Milverton
They have two time-travellers now. They’ll be totally unstoppable.
Sam
No, this can’t be right. I know those two, and their love it stronger than any I have ever seen. If you two love each other enough, then they definitely do.
Penda
But you’ve seen the evidence, I saved Karesh. Rory didn’t save Amy.
As she says this Amy and Rory break apart, turning to look at the four of them, their eyes flaring with malicious joy.
Sam
Was it really you that saved Karesh? [Pause] What if it was that gas that hit him? That cooling fluid?
Milverton
OF COURSE! The cooling fluid, that matches the bio-data we already had!
Amy and Rory start advancing on them.
Sam
Is there any in this room?
Milverton
In the computer. But if you take that out the computer will be damaged beyond repair, the survey –
Karesh
Do it.
Milverton looks at Karesh, surprised.
Karesh
Screw the survey, our lives are more important, do it!
Milverton
Right you are!
Milverton rushes towards the computer terminal and pulls open the back. He fiddles around for a moment before taking a spanner and smashing a pipe, releasing a torrent of steam and water-like liquid. He grabs a beaker from the work surface and holds it to the breach, allowing it to fill with liquid. He stands as Amy and Rory turn and walk towards him. He chucks the liquid over them. They blink for a moment, looking at each other before laughing and turning back to Milverton.
Amy
Your plan has clearly failed.
Rory
If this is how ineffective you are, it barely seems worth assimilating you.
Amy
Indeed, it’d be more prudent just to k-
She chokes on her words, holding her chest.
Amy
To ki- What have you done to me?!
Rory is also holding his throat and choking. Both of them are starting to become more human again. Milverton grins.
Milverton
I believe the phrase you’re looking for is “Oh shi-“
Amy and Rory simultaneously scream, drowning out Milverton. They fall to the floor clutching their heads. They fall silent and then, after a moment, get back to their feet. They both blink confusedly, before looking at each other grinning, and hugging, before Amy kisses him.
Karesh
Professor? Is that them dealt with then?
Milverton
I should think so. Penda, could you check?
Penda hurries over to another, smaller terminal and checks a screen.
Penda
Everyone else on the base and ship has collapsed, and are getting up now. Looks like it worked.
Karesh
Just to make sure, put some of that cooling fluid through the vents.
Milverton
Shouldn’t be necessary. I expect the feedback probably killed the entity completely. Everyone who it took over will be either back to normal or dead.
Sam
Nice happy ending then.
Milverton
I shouldn’t imagine too many were that far gone.
Karesh
Anyway, back to business. You three have simultaneously caused me a tonne of problems and saved us, this entire planet and possibly the entire universe too. So get the hell out of here before I decide what to do with you.
He grins at them, before Amy, Rory and Sam walk to the door and leave. Before Sam goes he turns and gives a small, two-fingered salute to Karesh. Karesh returns it before Sam walks out the door.
Karesh
OK, usual drill, have them shot on the way out.
Penda and Milverton exchange shocked looks.
Karesh
Seriously? It’s a joke your numbskulls.
Penda giggles, whilst Milverton looks exasperated and walks over to the damaged computer terminal.
Ext. Street – Night
Rory, Amy and Sam are walking down the street.
Rory
Never do that to me again.
Amy
Kiss you? OK.
Rory
No, go off and investigate on your own.
Amy
It all turned out OK in the end.
Rory
Yeah, this time.
Amy
Oh, don’t be so clingy. You’re beginning to sound like the Doctor.
Rory
And you’re beginning to sound like River.
Sam
Oh, shut up and kiss already. Actually no, save it till I go home, otherwise it’ll just be embarrassing for all of us.
Amy
I’m not sure if I can wait that long.
Rory
Maybe you’ll have to.
Sam pretends to retch in the gutter, but he’s grinning.
Sam
Seriously guys, I thought you were both gone.
Amy
Nah, Sam. You’ll never get rid of us two.
Sam smiles at her, but Rory looks quietly uncertain. Amy gives him a forceful look, and he smiles, but it’s a sad smile, which she then returns. They both remember their other friend who they never wanted to lose.
THE END
Karesh
