THE GUIDING LIGHT BY LEWIS ROBINSON-HURST
It's been one wonderful year for Manhattan, She Wrote. Here's to another!
EXT. CENTRAL PARK NIGHT
It’s night. A homeless man, BRIAN, sleeps on a bench. He shudders in the cold with only a newspaper acting as a blanket. Footsteps. A figure stands in front of Brian. He opens one eye weakly.
BRIAN
If you’ve come to mug me, then mug me. I haven’t got nothing of worth. Just let me sleep.
The figure stays still.
BRIAN
Look, just take what you want alright?
The figure doesn’t move.
BRIAN
Oh Jesus. Look, what do you want? I’m tired, it’s cold and I ain’t got time for this.
The figure leans over Brian, it is obscured and we can’t see any details.
FIGURE
Brian… I’ve been sent for you.
BRIAN
Sent? Sent by who?
FIGURE
The lord.
BRIAN
Which lord?
FIGURE
The lord on high…
The figure shifts and a heavenly light bursts forth, enveloping both the figure and Brian. After a few moments, it subsides and there is nothing left… apart from a slightly burnt newspaper…
EXT. ALLEY NIGHT
Nothing moves. In fact it’s a rather pleasant, quiet evening. But then, something stirs. A wind picks up. The air ripples and suddenly, with a flash of blue light, a woman appears. At first glance, she appears to be Mary Poppins. But her features are colder and much crueller. Cleary not the type to dish out a spoonful of sugar and certainly not supercallifragilisticespeallidocus. She falls to the ground with grace and looks about. She twirls her umbrella and smiles. This is MISSY.
MISSY
Oh New York. How wonderfully… drab you’ve become.
She chuckles sharply. Suddenly a noise of something moving. Missy twirls about. A tramp shifts uneasily as he looks at her.
TRAMP
How did you do that? Appear like that? Is it a magic trick? You one of them magicians?
Missy grins evilly.
MISSY
You know… you really should have stayed quiet. Because now I have to kill you.
TRAMP
Kill me?
MISSY
Yes. I’m afraid your time upon this mortal plane is done. The grim reaper is coming a calling. However you want to put it.
She pulls out a remote like device and points it at the Tramp.
MISSY
Say something nice.
The Tramp is alarmed. He doesn’t believe the device can hurt him, but something about Missy scares him.
TRAMP
Miss, you can’t kill me. The police will be after you. And besides, it’s Christmas. Good will to all men and that.
Missy pauses. She lowers the device. The man seems relieved for a moment. Missy grins again.
MISSY
You’re right. It is Christmas.
She points the device at the tramp and presses the button. A beam fires out and kills him. His body vanishes. There is nothing left apart from ashes. Missy chuckles.
MISSY
Happy Christmas to me.
She chuckles once more, turns and leaves the alley. Her work done.

INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY OFFICES DAY
Sun shines through the windows. The office is certainly brighter and cleaner than when we last saw it. Louise walks in, a happy smile on her face. She dusts one of the desks, the menial tasks helping to distract her from her trauma. She walks into Amy’s office and tuts. The remains of a half-eaten takeaway are scattered about. Amy herself sleeps in her chair with her head resting in her arms on the desk. Louise carefully picks up the takeaway and puts it in the bin. She heads to the otherside of the room and turns on the kettle. Amy stirs and awakes. She sees Louise and smiles.
AMY
What time is it?
LOUISE
Just gone 12.
AMY
I’m guessing 12pm.
Louise nods.
AMY
Rory’s gonna kill me.
Amy starts. She mentally kicks herself for the poor choice of words. Luckily Louise doesn’t seem to notice.
LOUISE
Small case or big one?
AMY
Why does it matter?
LOUISE
Well if it’s a small case you’ll need tea, if it’s a big one you’ll need coffee.
AMY
It’s a small one.
LOUISE
Tea it is.
Louise pours the kettle and places two teabags into mugs. Amy yawns and looks around.
AMY
Where’s Sam?
LOUISE
Sam?
AMY
Yeah. Sam. The gruff no nonsense detective with a really bad taste in clothes. That hat with that coat. I mean come on.
Louise giggles.
LOUISE
He’s off for Christmas remember? He’s gone to see his daughter.
AMY
Oh yeah.
Louise changes the subject.
LOUISE
So… do you have any family scattered about out there? I’m guessing they’re all still in Scotland.
AMY
Oh no. Mum, Dad and Aunt Sharon moved down to this little village in England. Leadworth. It’s where I grew up. It’s where I met Rory actually.
LOUISE
Hang on, if you grew up in England, how come you’ve got the Scottish accent?
AMY
I like being different. Anyway, Mum, Dad and Aunt Sharon are all happy in Leadworth. Or will be happy in Leadworth depending on how you look at it.
LOUISE
Oh god. You’re from the future. Sorry I keep forgetting.
Amy waves it away.
LOUISE
And… I don’t mean to pry… but you mentioned you had a daughter. On the night when we… you know…
AMY
Yes. Yes I have a daughter.
LOUISE
How old is she?
AMY
At least 40. Probably older. She’s a time traveller.
LOUISE
I see. Well I better get back to it. This place doesn’t clean it self haha.
She gives Amy a mug of tea and turns to leave.
AMY
Louise?
Louise turns.
LOUISE
Yeah?
AMY
You are happy here right? You said before you’d only stay until Christmas. That was a few weeks ago. It’s December 24th. Have you decided yet?
Louise’s shoulders drop.
LOUISE
I honestly don’t know.
She leaves. Amy sips her tea thoughtfully.
INT. THE GARNER HOUSEHOLD
Sam is happy. Perhaps for the first time in years. He sits on a sofa as his daughter, a young girl LUCY, plays with her toys on the floor in front of him. She holds a doll up for her father to see.
LUCY
This one I’m calling Adrianna.
SAM
Adrianna? That’s an usual name.
LUCY
She’s the woman who was Snow White in the movie! At least that’s what Grandpa’s newspaper said.
Sam nods and chuckles. He picks up said newspaper which lies to his side. He glances at the headline. “WAR CONTINUES IN EUROPE” He grimaces for a moment. He puts the paper down to one side. That’s something to worry about another day. Sam gets up.
SAM
I’ll be right back darling.
LUCY
Ok.
She’s too interested in her dolls to care. Sam leaves the room and enters the kitchen. A woman in her 60s cooks. Her white hair is done up neatly in a bun. She’s MAISIE GARNER, Sam’s mother.
SAM
Starting Christmas dinner early this year ma?
MAISIE
Well if I don’t start it now, it won’t be ready for Christmas Day.
She turns.
MAISIE
You are coming? It’ll mean so much to Lucy. She hardly sees you anymore. You’re always off working and you’re in a dangerous line of work and-
Sam places two reassuring arms on her shoulders.
SAM
Ma. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
Maisie smiles and pats her sons hands affectionately.
MAISIE
Oh listen at me. Panicking like an old coot. You go back into the living room dear. I’m sure Lucy wants to spend every minute with you.
Sam smiles and returns to the living room. Lucy looks up and holds up another doll.
LUCY
This one I’m calling Louise!
SAM
Louise? Why Louise?
LUCY
It’s a pretty name! And you said it in your sleep last night.
Sam blushes.
INT. HOSPITAL
Rory checks on several patients. He walks up to an elderly overweight gentlemen with a long white beard.
RORY
So… you fell off a rooftop?
PATIENT
Yes.
RORY
Care to explain what you were doing on the rooftop?
PATIENT
Scouting.
RORY
For what?
PATIENT
For tomorrow. Big night.
Rory raises his eyebrows.
RORY
Big night for who?
PATIENT
For me of course! Got to do it all in one night haven’t I? They’re not gonna deliver themselves you know!
Rory smiles politely. He walks away and grabs a nurse by the shoulder.
RORY
Get someone from psychiatrics down here for the patient in bed 12.
The nurse nods and walks away.
INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY OFFICES
The phone rings. Amy answers.
AMY
Hello? Oh. Right. That’s interesting. Yeah I’ll be right there.
She hangs up. Louise bobs her head around the door.
LOUISE
Case?
AMY
Yep. Sounds alien.
LOUISE
I’ll hold the fort.
Amy leaves. Louise smiles. She walks over to Amy’s desk and straightens some papers. She looks up. Missy is stood in the doorway.
LOUISE
Oh. Hello. I didn’t see you there. If you’re looking for Miss Pond, I’m afraid you just missed her.
MISSY
Oh what a pity.
Missy walks in and makes herself comfortable on one of the sofas.
LOUISE
I’m not sure when she’ll be back, it might be better to come back later.
Missy ignores her. She somehow manages to conjure a teapot and cups from thin air. She looks up and smiles at Louise.
MISSY
Fancy a spot of tea?
Louise frowns and sits down opposite Missy. Missy pours herself some tea and then holds the tea pot over Louise’s cup.
MISSY
Little splosh?
Louise nods.
MISSY
Lovely.
She pours. They both drink their teas.
MISSY
You’re the one with the dead daughter yes?
Louise stops. She puts her tea down, shaking.
LOUISE
How do you know about that?
MISSY
Oh please. I’ve done my research.
LOUISE
Research?
MISSY
Oh yes. Always helps to do a bit of research. Especially Sam and that daughter of his. Very interesting. And Amy and Rory, woman and man out of time. It’s all very interesting to me. I like to keep tabs on you all.
LOUISE
Sorry… but do we know you? Because you know an awful lot about us.
MISSY
I do know you. In a way.
LOUISE
…Are you River Song? Because… you match the description perfectly.
MISSY
I’ll ignore that and take it as a compliment. So. Your daughter. How did it feel when she died? Or more accuratly, when you killed her?
LOUISE
It wasn’t murder. I turned the life support off.
MISSY
Which stopped her heart beating. Which killed her. See where I’m going with this?
LOUISE
It wasn’t murder! She was braindead! The machine was only keeping her heart beating!
MISSY
And you know that for a fact do you? Or did they tell you that? That’s the thing about these people. You never know when they’re telling the truth. For all you know, they manipulated you. Lied. About everything. Your daughter could be alive and well now if you hadn’t listened. She could be excited for Christmas instead of lying cold and dead in a grave.
LOUISE
Shut up! Leave. I want you to leave.
Missy takes one last sip of her tea. She stands up. She takes a final look at Louise.
MISSY
I’m only looking out for you. I’d hate for you to meet a sticky end. Like everyone else who gets connected to these people. And if it makes you feel any better, your daughter is happy.
LOUISE
What do you mean?
MISSY
She’s happy. In the Nethersphere. Paradise. Heaven. Whatever you call it. She’s very very happy. I was talking to her earlier. Such a wonderful child. A very active imagination. You know, she loves twirling her hair in a long braid and dancing, just so it’ll spin behind he-
LOUISE
Stop it! I don’t know what type of sick joke you’re playing, but it ends now.
She points at the door.
LOUISE
Get out.
MISSY
Very well dearie. Try and be nice and this is the response I get.
Missy walks to the door. She turns back to Louise.
MISSY
I’ll expect you soon shall I?
She leaves. Louise stands in the office, alone and broken.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK DAY
Amy stands in front of the bench where Brian vanished. She is flanked by two Police Officers, JENKINS and BRETT. A drunk, BILL, stands to one side.
AMY
And he just vanished. Like that? Vanished? Poof?
BILL
Pretty much. That hooded bloke said some stuff then there was this light and then they were gone.
BRETT
Are you sure you didn’t stop by the bar on your way home Bill? Because you smell like it.
BILL
I may have had a bottle or two. But I saw what I saw.
JENKINS
Look Bill, you’ve wasted Police time before and we’ve had to call in Miss Pond, a PI, who specialises in these cases, called in by some unknown higher up. So if you’re wasting her time too…
BILL
Why would I? Why would I lie about this?
JENKINS
Because you once told us you saw flying gold pots in the park.
AMY
(under her breath) That one actually happened…
Amy walks to the bench. She pulls out the scanner.
AMY
Residual traces of matter transportation… yet not enough to get a trace. Doesn’t match any teleport known to us… Which means it’s something new.
BRETT
Anytime you plan on speaking English, Miss Pond?
AMY
This was an abduction. That’s all I know.
BRETT
An abduction? But who’d wanna abduct a homeless guy?
AMY
That’s just what I’m going to find out…
INT. ALIEN BLACK MARKET DAY
AMY
Oi! Prawn!
PRAWN screams and scuttles desperately away trying to escape. Amy grabs him and pulls him back to his stall.
PRAWN
I promise you, Miss Pond, whatever it was it wasn’t me! I was here! Ask my wife!
AMY
…You have a wife? I thought you were gay!
PRAWN
…shit.
AMY
Really not helping yourself here Prawn. Look.
She puts the scanner on the table. She points at the readings.
AMY
All I want is to know what this is. Then I’ll be out of your hair.
Prawn clicks furiously.
PRAWN
It’s old. Very old. Ancient technology. Yet very advanced. Far beyond anything I’ve ever seen. Yet… there’s some time travel involved. I can’t trace them to their source… but I can predict where they’ll appear next.
AMY
Excellent. Show me.
Prawn holds out his hand. Amy raises her eyebrows.
AMY
It’s Christmas.
PRAWN
And what did you get me?
Amy rolls her eyes and sumps a small device on the table.
AMY
A still working holographic mind graft entertainment system.
PRAWN
I haven’t seen one of these in years!
He places the device on his head. Suddenly a holographic image of an attractive young man in his underwear appears in front of them. Prawn takes the device off.
PRAWN
Yes this will do nicely. Now Miss Pond, your co-ordinates.
INT. GARNER HOUSEHOLD NIGHT
The phone rings. Sam answers it.
SAM
Hello?
AMY (Over Phone)
Sam, I need you.
SAM
Amy… can it wait until Boxing Day?
AMY
It can’t. People are disappearing. I need your help. I’m sorry. I really am. But I need you. Please.
Sam groans. He bangs his head against the wall.
SAM
I’ll be right there. Where do you want me?
AMY
Meet me at Central Park.
Sam hangs up.
LUCY
Daddy, who was that?
SAM
Work.
He kneels down in front of her.
SAM
Baby, I am so sorry. I have to go. Work stuff. I’ll be back soon.
LUCY
Do you promise?
SAM
I promise.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK NIGHT
Sam walks through the park. He grumbles. He kicks a few leaves. It’s pretty clear Amy is late. He scowls. A twig snaps. He turns.
SAM
Amy?
Missy steps out from behind a tree.
MISSY
Hello there.
SAM
Hello.
Missy walks towards Sam.
MISSY
I must say… You’re much more attractive than I thought.
SAM
Excuse me?
MISSY
The hat. It frames your jaw perfectly. I feel like taking a picture, framing it and cherishing it for all eternity.
SAM
Lady, are you drunk?
MISSY
Possibly. Drunk on love.
Sam rolls his eyes.
SAM
Lady, you’re nuts.
Missy grins and walks off.
MISSY
Bananas actually.
Sam walks off.
INT. Hospital Night
Rory sleeps on his desk. It’s been a long night.
MISSY
Wakey wakey.
Rory wakes up with a start
RORY
Who’s there?
Missy sits down opposite Rory’s desk. She pours some tea.
MISSY
Thought you might like some tea.
RORY
Do I know you?
MISSY
I shouldn’t think so.
Rory takes a cup of tea and sips.
MISSY
Must be hard. Working here all the time and then following your wife’s… aha… pursuits.
RORY
Excuse me?
MISSY
The Detective thing. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten? But then again I suppose it is rather forgettable. It’s not even that imaginative. Bit silly really.
RORY
I’m sorry?
MISSY
I suppose you’re wanting her to give it all up and start a normal life?
RORY
How did you-
MISSY
Never mind how I know. Just know this. It’s never going to happen. Not unless…
RORY
Unless?
MISSY
Oh you’ll find out soon enough.
Rory blinks. Missy vanishes. Amy walks in.
AMY
What are you doing?! I called you an hour ago! Come on! We don’t have much time!
EXT CENTRAL PARK NIGHT
Amy, Rory and Louise run up to Sam.
SAM
Where the hell have you been?!
AMY
Ask sleeping beauty here.
Rory blushes.
AMY
Anyway, there’s been abductions all around the city. They’ve been using a teleport, but luckily we’ve been able to determine where they’ll next appear. Which with any luck… is right here right now.
They all look about nervously. And then… a figure approaches them. Amy, Rory and Sam draw their weapons. Louise backs away slowly.
FIGURE
Amelia Jessica Pond, Rory Arthur Williams, Samuel James Garner, Louise Eliza Jameson. You have all been chosen for ascension.
SAM
Sorry to burst your bubble, but no ones ascending anywhere.
He shoots the figure. The bullets have no effect.
AMY
When you’re done wasting bullets…
The figure raises his arms, a heavenly light envelops them all… and then they’re gone.
INT. THE SPACECRAFT
Amy, Rory, Sam and Louise stand in a wide space. It’s… heavenly. Beautiful. Like a garden. In fact it is a garden. The four of them are bewildered. A beautiful heavenly being steps forward… GABRIEL
GABRIEL
Welcome… to heaven.
AMY
Err… what?
GABRIEL
Welcome to heaven.
AMY
No this isn’t heaven.
GABRIEL
You must learn to stop doubting Amelia. This is heaven.
AMY
Trust me pal, I’m not sure what con you’ve got going here, but it’s not heaven.
LOUISE
Amy… it’s possible it might be…
AMY
Trust me Louise, this isn’t heaven. I know why you want it to be… but it’s not. Trust me Louise. I’m your friend. This isn’t right. Believe me.
GABRIEL
Louise… Abbie is here. She has waited for you…
AMY
Louise don’t listen. It’s a trick or a trap. Whatever this thing is, it wants you and that’s not good.
GABRIEL
Louise, you can see her again. Just take my hand.
He holds out his hand.
GABRIEL
Just take my hand Louise…
AMY
Louise… don’t. Please.
LOUISE
Was she braindead?
AMY
I’m sorry?
LOUISE
When you asked me to end her life… was she really braindead? Or was that a lie?
Louise’s hand hovers near Gabriel’s. She looks at Amy.
AMY
Louise, everything I told you was the truth. I promise. I would never ever lie to you. You’re my friend. And I would never lie to you.
Louise searches Amy’s eyes for a few moments… her hand quivers… and… she hugs Amy.
LOUISE
Thank you.
Amy smiles. Gabriel’s features begin to distort. His once beautiful face becomes more hellish and monstrous.
GABRIEL
Humans. With your sentiment. You make me sick.
RORY
And what exactly is it your after?
GABRIEL
Human lives. They power our ship so well. But only if the life is given freely. If the life is taken by force it doesn’t work half as well. But we can manage.
AMY
Yeah I don’t think so. Rory, Sam? Ready?
SAM
Waiting on your word.
AMY
Let’s do it.
Sam pulls out a device and presses it. Explosions rock around the ship.
GABRIEL
What have you done?!
RORY
Well why you were busy talking, me and Sam hacked into your ship controls and activated the self-destruct. Really who installs self-destruct?
SAM
In fact it was exceedingly easy.
RORY
Well it is Christmas.
AMY
Are you both really complaining about how easy it was to defeat the aliens?
RORY
Oh right sorry.
Rory presses a few buttons on his device.
RORY
Reversing the teleport now… and we’re away.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK DAY
Amy, Rory, Sam and Louise are back in central park. They look up and watch as a huge explosion rocks the sky.
SAM
Well… that’s that.
AMY
That is indeed that.
LOUISE
Is it always this easy?
SAM
Hell no.
Sam checks his watch.
SAM
Shit! I’m late! I missed it!
AMY
Missed what?
SAM
Christmas dinner with my daughter! I promised! I promised…
He starts to cry.
Amy smiles.
AMY
Well… I have a favour to call in that might help with that…
EXT. GARNER HOUSEHOLD NIGHT
RIVER SONG and Sam appear in a bright flash. River checks her Vortex Manipulator.
RIVER
Yes it all seems correct. Exactly 30 minutes after you left.
SAM
Thanks River.
RIVER
Just don’t get used to it Ok? Time is volitale here… but a quick trip like this every once in a while doesn’t hurt. Just not all the time ok?
SAM
Ok.
He walks to the door.
RIVER
Oh and Sam!
SAM
Yeah?
RIVER
Merry Christmas.
SAM
Merry Christmas.
River vanishes.
SAM
Crazy curly haired broad…
He enters the house.
INT. GARNER HOUSEHOLD
LUCY
Daddy!
She runs to her father.
LUCY
You’re back!
SAM
Don’t sound so surprised. I promised I’d be back and I am.
LUCY
I don’t like it when you go away.
SAM
I know baby. But I promise you, I’m not going anywhere. I’ll always, always, be here for you. And I’ll never leave you.
LUCY
You really promise?
SAM
Pinky promise.
They hug.
INT. AMY AND RORY’S HOME
Amy sits down with a mug of tea. She reads a manuscript. Rory walks in, his hands behind his back.
RORY
What’s that?
AMY
Latest manuscript. Summer Falls. I quite like it.
RORY
Well… you can take a look at this instead.
He holds out a present.
AMY
Oooo. I thought the other ones were all I was getting?
RORY
This one’s special.
Amy unwraps it. It’s a beautiful necklace. It’s inscribed I will never leave you. Amy smiles.
INT. ANGEL DETECTIVE AGENCY DAY
Amy is doing work. Louise walks in.
AMY
Hey.
LOUISE
Hey.
AMY
You ok?
LOUISE
Yeah.
Pause.
LOUISE
I just want to say thank you.
AMY
No thanks needed.
LOUISE
There is.
They smile.
LOUISE
One last thing… I think my temparoy position… might be permant.
They grin.
AMY
I’ll get you a desk.
Louise walks out.
MISSY (OS)
Oh how sweet. You know you two would make a great couple.
AMY
Who’s there?
Missy steps forward, her face shrouded in shadow.
MISSY
I’d just like to drop my thanks for dealing with those… imposters. Can’t have two afterlives running around can we?
She laughs.
MISSY
You know, they said you were good… they never said you were this good.
AMY
You put us on the case…
MISSY
Correct.
AMY
Why?
MISSY
I needed the best. And now, as payment, a warning. Beware of her.
AMY
Who?
MISSY
Her.
AMY
Who’s “her”?
MISSY
You’ll find out soon enough.
Amy scowls. She opens her mouth to say something… but Missy has vanished.
INT/EXT. HEAVEN
Gabriel awakes on a comfortable armchair. He’s in a wonderful sitting room. Missy is sat opposite him.
MISSY
Hello! Welcome to heaven! The real one, not the hack job you were running. Do you fancy some tea?
Gabriel nods. Missy leans into an intercom.
MISSY
Seb, we need tea.
She leans back and smiles at Gabriel.
MISSY
So, I suppose you have a lot of questions…
INT. BOAT
A man walks down some stairs into a comfortable living area. Only one seat. It’s facing away from us. He reaches the seat.
MAN
My lady, we’re approaching New York.
The woman in the chair waves him away. He leaves. She stands. She has long red hair that flows down her back, she wears a dark red evening gown. She picks up a wine glass and sips. She walks up to an ornamental sword hanging on the wall. She touches it lightly. She then walks to an armour displayed in full. She sips her wine and smiles.
WOMAN
Oh Magister, you should have waited for me. You really should.
She smiles again.
WOMAN
No matter… where “Mr Violet” failed, Lady Elizabeth Domina will surely succeed.
Domina walks up some stairs onto the deck. She looks at New York in the distance.
DOMINA
Oh New York… soon you will know fire and war unlike any other.
She sips her wine.
DOMINA
I can’t wait…
MANHATTAN SHE WROTE WILL RETURN IN “OUR LADY ELIZABETH” EASTER 2015
